Michael Kennedy

Michael Kennedy is a painter and printmaker who has also worked extensively as a teacher of art and design. He is an artist and committee member of the Printmakers Council and a graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art. Printmaking has always been an important aspect of his work in a wide range of processes, although recent work has focused almost exclusively on relief printmaking, especially linocut, often combined with stencil print. His studio in North Kent is equipped with a double-crown Albion relief press made in London by William Pye in 1863. The mini-print has featured strongly in his output over recent years and his work has been included most major Miniature print exhibitons. His larger work has been shown extensively including at the Barbican, National Theatre and frequently in the RA Summer  Show. Characteristic of his work is an emphasis on shape and colour. Prints are intentionally decorative and whatever else they do they must first hold and delight the eye. The work has a strong abstract quality but pieces frequently originate broadly from still life and from a sense or remembrance of place
